We are excited to offer this multi-faceted approach that is equally:
– a rigorous and inspired program for yoga teachers.
– a deeper and personal study curriculum for yoga students.
Nové’s teacher training approach is methodically designed to provide yogic study that is anatomy-based, philosophical, and steeped in historical context. We place a strong emphasis on teaching skills and practice teaching, while also stimulating trainee studentship emphasizing the importance of personal practice and deepening self-development.
Studentship: Your Part, Infinite Possibilities
The real foundation of this training is YOUR commitment — your discipline and openness are critical to work in tandem with our quality of education and the environment we present it in. This training is a most wise choice as you seek infinite possibilities that lie within you.
And, BEYOND
No matter your objective, these 200 hours of training are part of something so big. The breadth of yogic wisdom is so expansive that no individual could ever learn it all in a single lifetime, much less from these 200 hrs. A steady stream of continuing education, immersions, more advanced trainings and other specialty practices and classes will continue to be on deck at Nové to further your studies. We are excited to bring together a unique expert team, in an innovative, welcoming, and sophisticated studio space in beautiful West Dennis, MA.
The Nové Yoga School Lineage
Nové Yoga School’s lineage blends the philosophies and methodologies of respected traditions such as Ashtanga (with its structured, dynamic flow, and emphasis on breath control) and Iyengar (known for precision, alignment, and use of props). These timeless lineages are then bolstered by principles of functional movement and rooted in exercise science, ongoing research in anatomy and kinesiology, and the importance of the individual within universal teachings and cues. We study ‘modern postural yoga’ (to use the terminology scholars have adopted to differentiate present-day practice) with a focus on methods and benefits backed by science. We will also study ancient yoga traditions. Our objective is to gain a preliminary understanding of what yoga is, and the roots with which our modern practice stems from by embracing both tradition and innovation. This unique blend offers a critical breadth of knowledge for any practitioner, while re-affirming our commitment to increasing equity in yoga.
200HR YTT PROGRAM FORMAT OVERVIEW
Our highly effective and sought after training is designed for yoga practitioners who wish to launch or refine a teaching career, or simply to deepen their personal practice. You will learn how to see and understand bodies, the principles of alignment and use of props, how to plan and sequence a class, ethical guidelines, understanding your ayurvedic constitution (yoga’s sister science), being comfortable with your voice for chanting mantra, and so much more. Importantly too, we place emphasis on constructive feedback which prepares you to teach – and practice – with confidence and clarity.
Asana Techniques, Trainings, Practice
Nové’s training provides a key foundation for yoga asana with emphasis on postural alignment. Trainees learn the fundamental principles of teaching: honing the skill of observation, assisting and correcting, and demonstrating. Emphasis on pose modifications and how to use yoga props facilitate the practice, with depth analysis on pose benefits and contraindications. Also, a rigorous review of each family of poses is taught (standing, backbend, forward bend, rotations, inversion, restorative, etc.) then further enhanced by explorations in sequencing and class structure. And, to enhance the asana sequencing study, we introduce the practice of meditation — the spiritual practice for quieting the mind and exploring our deeper Self.
Another highlight in our 200 YTT is highly productive small group work, and emphasis on safe and constructive forums to give and receive feedback. Homework assignments are creative and fun. Written feedback is provided on trainee homework for support and constructive, ongoing learning. Last, and critical for success in the art of teaching, we also put emphasis on communication skills, such as group dynamics, use of language and voice, establishing boundaries, pacing and time management to name a few, ever working to hone balance between individual needs and group structure.
Anatomy and Biomechanics
Essential in the study and mastery of teaching yoga is understanding the human body.
We reinforce basic anatomical and physiological principles and offer experiential, interesting, and accessible approaches to explore sometimes intimidating human anatomy. From both a teaching and a practice perspective, trainees come away with understanding body systems, skeletal structure, joint movements and stabilization, major muscles directly involved in asana, the impact of biomechanics on our structures, and other key content areas to respect the capacity and limitations in our bodies to support a safe practice for a wide range of students. Areas of study include: the skeletal system, nervous system (including vagal theory and overall mind/body connection), muscular system, fascia, cardiovascular and digestive systems, and more.
Pranayama / Subtle Body
Pranayama is yoga’s breath control practice that helps to still the mind. As one of the most efficient ways to open the doors of perception, it offers a reliable guide towards deeper states of meditation. Areas of study include: the anatomy of breath and breath mechanics; practices such as Ujjayi, viloma, bhastrika, kapalabhati, and nadi shodhana; a very brief introduction into ayurveda and the pacification of doshas; witnessing how active and restorative asana balance energetic forces and breath control; the Bandhas and their health benefits; Chakras and Nadis; the Vayus, Koshas, Gunas; Mantra and more.
Yoga Humanities (History, Philosophy, Ethics)
What most people know of yoga is the postures or asanas, though they represent only one small part of our practice. Our humanities study in this training delves into the origins of yoga. Trainees learn about yoga’s rich history and philosophy, supporting a comprehensive understanding of its roots and principles. Vedanta philosophy is introduced, as well as most relevant classical ancient texts: The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and The Bhagavad Gita. Our study objective is to encourage trainees to think critically and analytically about source materials and yoga philosophy. The practice is there to help grasp the theory, and life becomes richer and deeper.
The object of much yoga may focus on the body, the heart, the mind, but its larger purpose is to address the human condition. – Douglas Brooks, Sanskrit Scholar
Professional Essentials
Rounding out the training is emphasis on, but not limited to: accessibility; a choice of study electives to hone YOUR interests; and the business of yoga and marketing yourself (of note, Leslee spent over 20 years in strategic branding and marketing with Fortune 100 companies as well as small start-ups, now sharing best practices and finding your unique value proposition and position – super cool even for those not interested in teaching yoga.)
